Dropbox Buys E-Commerce A/B Testing Service Predictive Edge, Shuts It Down
Dropbox has made another acquisition: Predictive Edge, a startup that had built a way to personalise e-commerce offerings, along with dynamic pricing, for marketers to send out to users and run A/B tests around them.
The service will be shut down, and the founders will be working on something different, as they note in an announcement on the site:
Predictive Edge is joining forces with Dropbox!,” the company writes. “Going forward we’ll be focused on solving problems outside the world of A/B testing. As of today, you can no longer sign-up for our service, and we’ve informed current customers that our product will no longer be supported. Many thanks to you all for your feedback & support, and here’s to a new chapter!
A new — and intriguing — chapter. The founders note that they’re not continuing to develop this product, and it’s tempting to wonder how and if any of that technology will be applied in whatever they tackle next. Hu’s LinkedIn profile notes that he is now “building Mailbox at Dropbox.”
Predictive Edge was working in what is an emerging and growing area of e-commerce: dynamic pricing, used by the likes of Uber for surge pricing, but also e-commerce sites to present different prices depending on who is doing the looking.
This is Dropbox’s 17th acquisition, with five of the last six of companies focused on services for enterprises — if you were in doubt about how Dropbox is laying the groundwork for a more concerted push to drive more sales from business users.
Predictive Edge was started in 2010 by two graduates from Stanford and one from the University of Pennsylvania: Kevin Liu (from U Penn), Steven Wu and Marty Hu (both from Stanford), and it was part of the university’s StartX accelerator.
It’s not clear how much money Predictive Edge had raised, or the financial terms of this deal, but Great Oaks was the startup’s lead investor, with another backer being Zach Weinberg, a co-founder at Flatiron Health, among other things.
Russia Moves To Ban Online Services That Don’t Store Personal Data In Russia - This is a surprise!
The Russian government has moved one step closer towards a “China-like” approach towards Internet services.
Last night, the Russian State Duma (parliament) passed the first bill requiring that the personal data of all Russians should be stored inside the country.
The effects of the bill, if passed, would be wide-ranging, touching just about every international service used by Russians. Essentially, it would mean that Facebook, Google or any other international online service – including apps – used by people in Russia would need to have physical servers inside Russia’s borders.
Furthermore, these non-Russian companies would not be allowed to send data outside the country unless they can provide certain guarantees on data storage inside the country. For those who do not, the state telecommunications agency Roskomnadzor will require carriers to restrict access to those services.
The bill also proposes amendments to laws covering personal information and data protection.
A rough Google translate version of the key part of the bill says:
“When collecting personal data, including through information and the internet telecommunications network, the operator is required to provide a record that the systematization, accumulation, storage, updating and retrieval of personal data of citizens of the Russian Federation, is held on databases located in the territory of the Russian Federation.”
If this law is enforced to the letter — it would take effect in September 2016 — it could mean a fundamental change to how both international and Russian tech companies use international hosting services, not to mention huge costs for implementing the changes.
We have reached out to Google, Facebook and other companies for their response to the ruling.
“We do not have any comment that we can share at this point,” a Google spokesperson told us in an emailed response.
The move to store data in Russia part of an ongoing, wider move by the country’s government to tighten the reigns around how the Internet is used.
Some of the moves have been made in the name of combatting piracy — as in the case of proposals that would allow for sites to be blocked over take-down requests from rightsholders.
And some of this is in the name of national security. Russia, as we all know, is where NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is currently residing. His efforts have heightened awareness globally of how government agencies track average internet users’ data, unbeknownst to them, and raised questions of how other countries have proceeded on this front.
At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government has been gaining a reputation for putting a tighter rein on the movement of free speech in the country, with allegations that some of those moves have been made specifically against those who hold positions contrary to the Kremlin’s.
In that context, it’s hard to parse what the real motivation is for this latest piece of legislation.
Other countries allow personal data to be stored on U.S. servers via “safe harbor” agreements, letting U.S. companies operate freely in Europe and vice versa.
Online companies have until September, 2016, when the bill is supposed to take effect, to meet the requirement, according to the legislation submitted by Communist lawmaker Alexander Yushchenko, and Liberal Democrats Andrei Lugovoi and Vadim Dengin

THE WRATH OF GOD UPON NIGERIA
God says, Nigeria will be destroyed soon and rendered desolate because the people call upon my name with deceit; the people worship man and glorify man instead of Me; the people value liars more than those who speak the truth about Me; the people are using my name to pillage and deceive the poor and the rich but less educated people among them; the people don’t keep my laws and commandment; the people are only interested in miracle (prosperity, wealth, etc.) and not salvation (seeking kingdom of God) and the people are evil Jeremiah 44:22-23.`
The world will rather come to an end instead of the word of God to go back to Him without accomplishing its purpose Isaiah 55:11. Nigeria is country created by one man and handed over to those whose majority do not worship God to rule over to those who worships God, because God wants it so for a period of time. The word of God is coming to you, either you believe it or not. God has allowed those descendant of Ismail to rule over His children because they do not worship Him and it’s based on this reason that Nigeria will be destroyed. The people of Nigeria have sinned greatly that is why we are suffering, sickness everywhere, people are dying mysteriously, there is mayhem everywhere, people are no longer speaking the truth because they want money to eat, young people are sycophants for politicians while there future are been wasted by these hopeless and corrupt politicians; the young people are no longer interested in pursuing a normal course towards success but are deceived into believing that by worshiping with a particular church or by attending a prayer house or by letting a particular man of god pray for them, then their success is grantee; the people in charge of running the government are looting the treasurer and laundering the fund to already developed nations while those who owns the resources that generates the money are jobless, sick, dying, suffering and smiling; the rulers or politicians in Nigeria hates those who speak the truth or condemns their evil deeds and are indirectly and directly killing them; in Nigeria only praise singers have the chances of surviving and church is the most lucrative business; so tell me why God will not destroy Nigeria?
God is warning you to make U-turn else you will be consumed alongside those who are perpetrating evil with highest impunity, those whose corruption is supported by this lawless contraption called Nigeria, those who knows nothing good but deceit, those who blackmails the poor who they claim they are protecting and working hard to better their lives and those whose good works are seen only on media and signposts or their developmental works last only as long as their tenure lasts. God wants us to understand that we may have everything we think we need but He has the final say over our life which is like a vapour James 4:14, that is why He ask us to seek His kingdom and be holy; therefore anyone who is not seeking the kingdom of God and who is not holy will be consumed in the upcoming destruction and total desolation of this Nigeria. Therefore, I urge you to repent if you are still living in sin or if you are an accomplice to the aforementioned evil people, and still claim that you are a child of God; because no child of God is a wilful sinner or commits sin; 1 John 3:9. Remember that Gods word will never return to Him void without accomplishing its purpose Isaiah 55:11 and this world may pass away but this word of God will never pass away Luke 21:33. Thanks for your time, always read the bible with deep reasoning and apply the word of God in your daily life. He who has ears let him hear, Mark 4:9. God bless you. Google is at it again with unlimited cloud storage!
Under pressure from Microsoft’s Office 365, Google has launched a premium edition of Apps with unlimited cloud storage and extra IT controls, and has also improved the Docs office productivity suite.
Although this new edition is essentially Apps for Business with an extra set of features, Google has branded it differently, shifting the spotlight from “apps” to storage by calling it Drive for Work.
It’s an acknowledgement by Google of the red hot popularity of cloud storage and file sharing services for personal and work documents, like its own Drive, which has about 190 million active home and business users, Microsoft’s OneDrive and OneDrive for Business, and similar services from Box, Dropbox and others.
“We’re in a market that understands the value of cloud storage and its massive adoption, so it’s an important thing to call out right now,” said Scott Johnston, Google Drive’s director of product management.
Drive for Work and the enhancements to Docs are also a needed competitive reaction from Google to the momentum of Office 365, which, despite arriving four years after Apps, has helped Microsoft quickly recover lost ground in the market for cloud email and collaboration suites.
Office 365 and Google Apps offer email, calendaring, storage, IM, Web-based office software and audio/video communications for businesses, schools, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
But Microsoft’s suite also offers the option of the full-featured desktop Office apps, recently ported to the iPad, and the Yammer enterprise social networking tool, an element Google Apps lacks.
Office 365 is also viewed as clearly stronger than Apps in some areas, including in unified communications with Lync Online and in intranet-type collaboration with SharePoint Online.
A big attraction for Google Apps has been its price—$5 per user, per month—which is lower than most of the fee-based editions of Office 365. (Both companies offer free versions of their suites for certain types of customers.)
For example, the Enterprise E3 version of Office 365 costs $20 per user/month, but it comes with the full-featured Office productivity suite, which each user can install on up to five MacOS or Windows computers and five tablets. It also comes with 1TB of OneDrive for Business storage per user and with Yammer’s Enterprise edition.
Drive for Work, which at $10 per user/month costs twice as much as Apps for Business, is clearly an attempt by Google to offer an alternative to the higher-priced—but more sophisticated—Office 365 options.
Drive for Work includes everything in Apps for Business, but instead of limiting Drive capacity to 30GB per user, it removes that storage ceiling altogether and allows people to save individual files of up to 5TB in size.
“There are no asterisks on the storage,” Johnston said. “It’s truly unlimited at Google scale. We don’t want customers to spend time worrying about storage.”
Drive for Work also adds IT management features, such as the ability for admins to control which users can install the Drive desktop sync client. IT admins also get more granular audit features, so that they can more closely track actions users take on Drive files, like moving, deleting or sharing them internally and externally. Drive for Work includes an API (application programming interface) for the audit functionality so third-party developers can access it from their own tools and applications.
Another goody included with Drive for Work is Vault, Google’s email archiving and compliance tool, which is available to Apps for Business customers for an extra fee. However, the version of Vault included with Drive for Work has a broader scope beyond email messages: it covers all files stored in Drive.
Drive for Work, like Apps for Business, is intended for businesses. Google will decide later if, as it does with Apps, it offers versions of Drive for Work for schools, government agencies and non-profits.
Google is also revamping Docs, its office productivity cloud suite, which includes word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, and is available free to individuals with Google accounts and also as part of Google Apps and Drive for Work.
QuickOffice, which Google bought two years ago, has been merged into Docs, giving Docs users native capabilities to open and edit Microsoft Office files created with Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The new functionality is available now when Docs is used on Android devices and via the Chrome browser. Support for iOS devices is coming soon.
Another enhancement to Docs announced Wednesday is the availability of the Slides presentation app for iOS and Android, following the release earlier of the Docs word processor and Sheets spreadsheet apps for those two mobile OSes.
Finally, in order to increase usage of Docs’ real-time, multi-user editing capabilities, Google has added a feature called “suggested edits” for changes made by people who aren’t the document’s creator. These edits will appear in a different color, so that the document’s author can consider them. The “suggested edits” feature is available in the word processing app and may be added to the other two later.
It’s also now possible for collaborators to add comments about the document on a side column, so that there can be a sort of running conversation among participants.
Overall, the improvements in the suite are aimed at “making Docs, Sheets and Slides easier to use,” said Ryan Tabone, Google Docs’ director of product management.
Docs was seen as an innovative product back in 2007, but in recent years Google has been criticized by many who feel it hasn’t made enough improvements to the suite. Microsoft has also put significant pressure on it with Office Online, a Web-based suite with lightweight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
Google has also improved Drive for all users by applying end-to-end encryption to files, meaning they’re protected from prying eyes while in transit from users’ devices to Google and as they move among the company’s data centers, as well as while they are “at rest” on Google servers.
Back in March, Google applied this type of encryption to Gmail, saying at the time that a big motivation for providing enhanced protection came from the revelations of government snooping by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
Google announced Drive for Work and the Docs and Drive enhancements at its I/O Conference in San Francisco.
